How an Architect Intern Adapts to Working from Home

As the ongoing crisis caused by COVID-19 has called millions of people around the world to quarantine, many companies, including those hosting InterExchange’s Career Training USA participants, have rapidly moved to remote work.

Oren M. is an architecture intern at L’Observatoire International in New York City. He is also adjusting to the new normal that many people are facing.

Same Job Responsibilities, Different Location

“Work is still the same as if I were in the office. I render views in Photoshop and 3D modeling is also needed from time to time. However, most of the work is Autocad drawings and documentation for construction. We have a fun weekly office video meeting and the office still runs online sales rep meetings and office lectures to learn more about the work and the projects.”

Participating in Company Culture and Maintaining a Positive Morale is Key!

“Yesterday we had a lecture by a lighting manufacturer and almost all the office team was online. We also have an office meeting on Monday mornings that now goes on via video call. Another example is a lecture today by two of our team leaders explaining interesting office projects. Almost all the activities we used to have are now on video calls so almost nothing is missed!”

Find Balance in Your Daily Routine!

“For me keeping the basic everyday routine is the key. Waking up at the usual time and not staying in bed! Diet is also important – I make sure to eat 3 meals a day, and now at home I can be sure that I get all the nutrients I need (very important). Also remember to not eat in front of the computer to give your mind a break. I like going for a quick 10 minute walk if the weather is nice and also a longer one once I finish my tasks. I also love baking! I bake almost every day, which calms me.”

Don’t Forget to Have a Little Fun During Your Free Time!

“When I’m not working I watch a lot of TV and movies on Netflix, HBO, PRIME TV. It’s also a good time to read books and practice my vocabulary. Most importantly, I started a new sourdough starter and baked my bread at home!”

Learning New Skill Sets Doesn’t Stop at the Office!

“I started learning lighting skills like calculations and I got a taste of what options exist in today’s lighting world. Another goal was to be able to work in an English speaking environment and be able to express ideas and thoughts with other colleagues. Being able to complete tasks independently is also very important for me.”

Like Oren, even through these difficult and uncertain times, it’s important to find balance in our daily lives. If you feel overwhelmed, try limiting your news consumption, go for a walk, and connect with others. Also, don’t forget to review the CDC’s advice on taking care of your emotional well-being, and contact InterExchange or your health care provider should you need any help or assistance. This new normal that we all are adjusting to is temporary and if we work together, we can #stopthespread!
